Leipzig, Feb. 27, 2007 (CWNews.com) - In Leipzig, Germany, a brother and sister have launched a campaign to abolish criminal laws against incest.

Patrick and Susan Stubing, who are the parents of 4 children, are asking legal permission to continue their romantic relationship. Patrick has already served one prison term for violating German laws against incestuous relationships, and faces another sentence because he refuses to leave his sister.

Patrick Stubing, who was adopted as a young child, did not know his parents or siblings until 2000, when he found his birth mother and his younger sister Susan. Their mother died soon thereafter, leaving the children alone, and a romantic relationship was kindled.

Leaders of Germany’s Green Party have voiced their support for the Stubings’ cause. “We must abolish a law that originated last century and today is useless,” said party spokesman Jerzy Montag. Critics of the laws against incest say that they were developed as a product of Hitler’s theories on racial purity.

A lawyer for the couple said that their relationship should be preserved as a matter of “sexual self-determination.” He pointed out that neighboring Belgium, Holland, and France do not make incest a criminal offense.
