The Gods Must Be Crazy

While the Pope is revered and adored, a saint in the minds of many who claim the pontiff a fierce defender of freedom in eastern Europe, particularly Poland in the 80’s, lets not forget he turned a blind eye to the repression and slaughter going on at the same time in Latin America. The top political dog of the Catholic religion wagged his finger at liberation theology as US backed Latin dictators murdered nuns and priests. He condemned clergy in Central America for siding with the people. A letter from the Vatican appealed for leniency on behalf of dictator and mass murderer Pinochet, an old friend of Pope John Paul’s. The pope asked for leniency for Pinochet on humanitarian grounds, for the sake of “reconciliation.” There’s that word again. A pontificating way to tell millions of victims in Latin America to “get over it.”
