Overweight Is Healthy

So says the NYT (same Times that told us there were WMD and Bush won the last 2 elections) so it must be true. Hallelujah, Americans now have medical approval to be overweight (yet poorly nourished) and burying years of their life under heft, and secure knowing that the fat epidemic has been checked by reality, it was all a blip of "national near-hysteria." What a relief huh? Damn, the study only addressed the "risk of death" and not the "disability or disease" that excess baggage carries.

"They mentioned a paper, also being published today in the journal, in which researchers including Dr. Edward W. Gregg and Dr. David F. Williamson, both of the C.D.C., report that high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are less prevalent now than they were 30 or 40 years ago, largely because of breakthroughs in medication."

There you go, medication. Eat all you want and when you have HBP, diabetes, etc. - medicate. Those love handles and rashy thighs, diabetes, reduced lung capacity, high BP, and sleep apnea, all have treatment: pills, miconazole cream, Advair Diskus, CPAP and BiPAP. All those sucking, slathering, puffing, popping, squirting, injecting breakthroughs will help you outlive your skinny friends. Why drop dead on a bareboat catamaran when you can go peacefully wheezing on the sofa with a bag of Doritos?
